They say pregnancy does funny things to your body and brain and although it’s not something I will experience first-hand, it is something I’m witnessing from the daddy-to-be perspective. So my sons due very soon and it’s not just her that’s been busy nesting. It’s affecting me too! But before you start with the jokes about me donning a frilly apron, marigolds and feather duster: I’d like to assure you that the kind of nesting I have been doing is very blokey indeed. What have you been doing Scott, you ask? Well I’ll tell you my friends, I’ve been going around the house with a hammer, smashing walls and generally ripping the place apart. *Grins proudly*.
What started off as a spare room (to be honest, bit of a dumping ground) has been transformed into my son’s beautiful new bedroom. Ready whenever he is. You can’t imagine how proud I am of my handy work and those of you that have seen the before pictures will be amazed at the way it’s turned out. On the day that I started, my sister came round to visit. I answered the door in my scruffy work clothes, hammer in hand. She came upstairs to see the progress I’d made and to her dismay saw the wall that I’d knocked through. She said ‘has this been approved by the better half?’ and I smiled, very cheekily I’m sure. I said I was going to break it to the other half when she got home from work (and before you ladies start yelling that she shouldn’t be working in her condition, I’ve tried all this to no avail, she’s insistent she’ll work till the baby’s ready to come and that’s that, if you want to try and stop her be my guest, but be warned although she looks incredibly cute she can be very assertive when she wants to be. Personal trainers: it’s their job to make you suffer). My plan was to mention it to her and then go for a little walk while she mulled it over. My sister (ever the optimist) advised perhaps I should pack a bag for this little walk that I was planning on taking because her view was mummy-to-be would freak and come after me with my own hammer!
Luckily for me, my fiancé is a very relaxed and forward-looking person and she saw my vision and bought into it straight away, smiling and reassuring and supportive as ever, praising me for my heroism and intelligence, telling me ‘whatever you want darling, you’re the man of the house’….(or more accurately, she didn’t have the energy to argue with me. Shrugged her little shoulders, rolled her eyes and went off for a chocolate biscuit). But as soon as the room was finished, there was no mistaking that she was completely on board. I’m so proud of the room and although it took a bit of effort, it was well worth it. I think you’ll agree from the pictures, it’s looking pretty smart, even if I do say so myself.
So any of you mummys-to-be dreading the idea of sorting out the right kind of space for the arrival of your little one, or any daddy’s-to-be that have been left in charge of the ‘nursery’ and don’t have the first clue what to do or how to achieve your dream nursery: fret no more! Feel free to drop me a line for free DIY advice, to discuss any building projects (big or small) and get hassle free quotes, or just to share the progress on nurseries! I’d love to hear from you.
